An outstanding introduction to Egyptian history – from the great pyramids to the delights of medieval Cairo

A wonderful journey of discovery through the Nile Valley. In Cairo, explore the outstanding Egyptian Museum, the pyramids and Sphinx, before travelling to Luxor to see the elaborate Karnak Temple. Browse the bazaars, and visit the renowned Valley of the Kings and the splendid Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. A relaxing cruise takes us south, upriver along the timeless Nile. Along the way, disembark at the riverside temples at Edfu and Komombo, before arriving in the laid-back city of Aswan. Wander through its seductive streets and waterfront and perhaps take an optional excursion to the grand Abu Simbel. On return to Cairo, our final day is spent amongst the lively, evocative medieval quarter, with visits to the 17th century Gayer-Anderson Museum, the mosque of Ibn Tulun and the bustling Khan al-Khalili Bazaar.

• Four nights on a comfortable Nile river cruise boat sailing from Luxor to Aswan, with sightseeing stops along the way.

• Horse-drawn carriage ride to Karnak.

• Transport by air-conditioned sleeper train in a private, two-person sleeping berth with beds and linen, an ‘airline-style’ dinner and breakfast, and toilet facilities located at the end of each carriage.

• Flight between Aswan and Cairo with all transfers on day 8.
