Johannesburg is South Africa's City of Gold and a major gateway for people travelling to the African continent. Johannesburg has a rich economic and cultural history and we explore two very important icons that helped shape the history of this modern African city.

Soweto is a sprawling township, or more accurately, a cluster of townships on the south-western flank of Johannesburg. Soweto was created in the 1930s, and has a current population of over 2 million. Here we are able to view the homes of two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, as well as visit the memorial to the Soweto Uprising of 1976 which became a catalyst for anti-Apartheid demonstrations across the country, and in fact the world.

To experience what apartheid South Africa was really like, a visit to the Apartheid Museum is fundamental. The museum is a beacon of hope showing the world how South Africa is coming to terms with its oppressive past and working towards a future that all South Africans can call their own.
