Santiago to Rio de Janeiro

19 days - from $3295

Having explored the main colonial sights of the Chilean capital we climb steeply into the Andes, past towering Mount Aconcagua before descending to the beautiful wine-growing region of Mendoza in Argentina. You can sample some of the regions great wines on our winery tour and there is also time to discover the town and to enjoy some great optional outdoor activities. Further inland we come to the geographical centre of Argentina at the university city of Cordoba. Founded by Jesuit Missionaries more than 400 years ago, Cordoba retains a strong colonial history, as you will discover on a walking tour of the city. Our next stop will be in 'Tango town', stylish, lively Buenos Aires, is home to nearly 14 million inhabitants and is one of the most exciting cities in Latin America. We have time to explore this great metropolis before heading northwards to the borders with Brazil and Paraguay, and to the incredible Iguazu Falls. They are 20 metres higher than the Niagara Falls and the chance to get up close is bound to be a highlight of our tour. We explore the falls from both the Argentine and Brazilian sides, before travelling eastward to join Brazil's most spectacular train ride, the Serra Verde Express, as it winds its way down from the mountains and through pristine rainforests to the Atlantic coast. We enjoy a beautiful trek through the forest along the Itupava Colonial Trail, before descending to the seaside town of Paranagua and the World Heritage-listed Superagui National Park. Last but certainly not least is colourful and vibrant Rio de Janeiro, resplendent with its stunning setting and beautiful sandy beaches.

What's It Like?

Gecko's adventures offer authentic experiences and a genuine alternative to backpacking. Our trips are designed for younger travelers on a budget but do include the entrance fees to the ‘must see’ sights while not wasting your money on unnecessary frills. Itineraries utilize public transport and basic twin share accommodations in small locally owned hotels, the occasional multi-share, or simply floor space in a jungle or village hut. Many trips involve some physical activity, the occasional long traveling day and you will need to carry your own bags. On camping trips, meals are freshly prepared by our camp cook, but expect to put up and take down your tent, and assist with camp chores. On all trips we only use local tour leaders who are passionate about their homeland. This is travel, grassroots style - basic but rewarding.
