Over-laden bicycles and motorbikes typify Vietnamese life and encounters with local cyclists will linger in the memory for many years to come.Cycling in Vietnam is a fitting way to explore this beautiful country, from its long coastline of broad, sandy beaches to shimmering paddy fields and mountains cloaked in verdant forests. Ride from the vibrant streets of Saigon northwards to the more conservative capital Hanoi. Out of the saddle, relax in the lively beachside town of Nha Trang and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere and great shopping in Hoi An. Stroll around its wooden merchant houses, pagodas and bustling market before enjoying a cruise around the incredible limestone towers rising dramatically from the sea in Halong Bay.
Itinerary:
Day 1 Start Saigon. 2 A mix of driving and cycling to the Cu Chi tunnels. 3 Drive towards the coast and cycle to Mui Ne. 4 Cycle to Dalat in the Central Highlands. 5 Cycle through Bidoup N.P. to the beach resort of Nha Trang. 6 Cruise around islands with seafood lunch and snorkelling. 7 Drive to beautiful Dai Lanh Beach; coastal ride to Quy Nhon. 8 Transfer to Quang Ngai; cycle to My Lai; transfer to Hoi An. 9 Sightseeing in Hoi An; free afternoon. 10 Ride over the spectacular Hai Van Pass; cycle and drive on to Hue. 11 Explore Hue and surroundings by bike and boat; overnight train to Hanoi. 12 Arrive Hanoi; drive to Halong Bay; board boat and cruise/kayak among spectacular limestone formations. 13 Cruise; return to Hanoi; city tour including the Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison and the Old Quarter. 14 End Hanoi.
Mode of travel: Average daily distance: 70km (43 miles) No. of days cycling: 8 Vehicle support: 90%. Terrain and route: surfaces are nearly all good tarmac. The route is flat with the exception of Dalat and the Hai Van Pass. Vietnam can be hot and humid, but rests and water are on hand. You should be comfortable riding in traffic on occasions.
