Hike to magnificent Machu Picchu Walk through Amazon rainforest Action and adventure in the Sacred Valley
On this active adventure we see the best of Peru and experience the rich variety of this fascinating country as we visit both the jungle and mountain regions. Our exploration starts deep in the Amazon basin, where we discover the sights and sounds of the world's largest rainforest, a remarkable area of wilderness and wildlife. We then head high up into the Andes and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, where our exploration of the ancient fortresses and temples is combined with opportunities for rafting and biking. The highlight of any trip to Peru is visiting Machu Picchu, the 'Lost City of the Incas', and we take a daywalk through cloud forest to approach the ruins from the Sun Gate, offering spectacular views of the whole site and the surrounding mountains.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Start Lima. 2 Free morning; afternoon city tour. 3 Fly to Puerto Maldonado; transfer by boat deep into Tambopata Reserve. 4 Guided jungle exploration by boat and on foot. 5 Guided jungle exploration. 6 Boat to Puerto Maldonado; fly to Cuzco and transfer to Sacred Valley, stopping at Pisac en route. 7 Visit Rainbow Centre Project and have lunch with the kids; afternoon explore Ollantaytambo fortress. 8 Morning rafting on Urubamba River; afternoon walking tour of Ollantaytambo town. 9 Drive to Chinchero then bike ride back to Sacred Valley via Moray and Maras salt pans. 10 Daywalk along Inca Trail to Machu Picchu from Km104. 11 Visit Machu Picchu; guided tour of site. Return to Cuzco by train. 12 Walking tour of Cuzco. 13 Free day in Cuzco. 14 Fly to Lima; optional evening visit to illuminated fountains. 15 End Lima.

Mode of travel: Flights via Houston with Continental. Transport by minibus, boat, train and 3 internal flights.
Group size: Normally 6 to 16, plus leader.
Accommodation: 11 nights in hotels with en suite bathrooms. 3 nights in a rustic jungle lodge - all rooms have private bathrooms with running water, but only main buildings have electricity, and at night candles and lamps are used for lighting.
