From the ancient cave temples of Dambulla to the extensive remains of the old capital at Polonnaruwa and the world famous Temple of the Tooth, there is something to fascinate everyone. We climb to the top of the Lions Rock Fortress in Sigiriya, take an elephant ride through the jungle and drive to Kandy which is the cultural hub of Sri Lanka. After visiting the tea plantations in the cool highlands we travel to Yala National Park where we take a game drive in search of elephants, crocodiles and leopard! Finally we head to stunning beaches lined with coconut palms - the perfect end to a varied and fun holiday. Itinerary:Day 1 Start Marawila. 2 To Sigiriya, site of the Lions Rock Fortress; relax by pool. 3 Climb to the top of Lions Rock and cycle through local villages. 4 Visit the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa (optional). In the afternoon we take an elephant ride in the jungle. 5 Visit the famous cave temples at Dambulla; explore a spice garden; drive to Kandy. 6 Visit the gem museum, Royal Botanical Gardens and see the Temple of the Tooth. 7 Visit a tea plantation in Nurawa Eliya and stay in the beautiful highlands. 8 Drive to Yala National Park via Ella gap. 9-10-11 Morning game drive followed by 3 nights at a beach to relax or explore the area. 12 To Colombo via the old Dutch Fort at Galle. 13 End Colombo. Mode of travel: Flights are with Sri Lankan Airlines or Jet Airways. Transport minibus, jeep, bicycle and elephant! Group size: Normally 4 to 18, plus leader and driver. Accommodation: 12 nights hotels, all en suite. The hotel in Sigiriya, where we spend 3 nights, is surrounded by serene jungle, in the shadow of the magnificent rock fortress. After a busy day you can choose between a dip in the pool or a little pampering in the sauna! Food: Breakfast included throughout.
