The best of Morocco in a week - an imperial city, the Atlas Mountains and Atlantic Coast
The 'Pink City' of Marrakech sits just north of the High Atlas Mountains which provide a magnificent backdrop to this exotic city. We explore the medina, the palace walls, museums and gardens as well as wandering through the busy souks. A night time visit to the colourful Djemaa el Fna is not to be missed. Leisurely walks in the High Atlas Mountains offer the opportunity to visit Berber villages and gain an understanding of the life of these hospitable mountain people. We complete the week in style with charming Essaouira, where we stay in a traditional Riad. Here, we discover the fascinating medina and enjoy free time for lunch at the fish stalls by the harbour and take a walk (or a camel ride!) along the long sandy beach. This trip offers a wonderful insight into three very different aspects of this vibrant and colourful country.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Start Marrakech. 2 Morning guided tour of Marrakech; visit the souks, mosques, tannery quarter and of course Djemaa El Fna Square. 3 Transfer to Tamatert, in the foothills of Morocco's highest mountain - Mt Toubkal. Overnight in mountain gite. 4 Daywalk up to Tamatert Pass (2250m) through beautiful valleys, rewarded with breathtaking views. 5 Descend to Imlil on foot; transfer to Essaouira for a relaxed evening in a riad after a long journey. 6 Morning guided tour in Essaouira; free afternoon to wander through the souks and impressive medina or enjoy the famous music scene. 7 Free morning to further explore Essaouira or simply spend some time on the beach; afternoon transfer to Marrakech, free evening to enjoy the beautiful Majorelle Gardens or simply soak up the atmosphere around the main square. 8 End Marrakech.

Mode of travel: Travel by private minibus and on foot, (1.5 relaxing daywalks), plus 4 days sightseeing in Marrakech and Essaouira.
Group size: Normally 4 to 16, plus leader.
Accommodation: 3 nights 3-star hotel in the new quarter of Marrakech (Gueliz) and 2 nights in traditional Riad in Essaouira - all with en suite rooms. 2 nights in beautifully restored mountain gite with traditional d?cor and view of snow-capped mountains - dormitory-style rooms with shared facilities.
