Often cited as the birthplace of civilisation, both Jordan and Egypt provide an excellent introduction to the ancient world with their rich history and breathtaking sites. We spend a full day exploring Petra, one of the most spectacular ruins in the world, as well as extensive guided visits to Egypt's greatest sites in Cairo and Luxor. We also spend time exploring the deserts of this region, with an evening under the stars at Wadi Rum and a rewarding climb of Mt Sinai before swimming or snorkelling on the Red Sea coast.
Itinerary:
Day 1 Start Amman. 2 Down the King's Highway to Petra; visit Dead Sea en route. 3 Full day at Petra. 4 Drive out to camp in desert scenery of Wadi Rum. 5 Morning ferry to Nuweiba, transfer to St.Catherine's Monastery; relax at auberge. 6 Early morning climb Mt Sinai; visit St Catherine's Monastery then 4WD and walk; overnight at Elaria hotel in Nuweiba. 7 Transfer to the beautiful Coloured Canyon; afternoon swimming at Abu Gallum; drive to Sharm el Sheikh. 8 Transfer to Sharm el Sheikh airport for flight to Hurghada; transfer to El Gouna. 9 To Luxor, guided visit to Karnak and Luxor temples. 10 Explore the West Bank; Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatshepsut's Temple and the Colossi of Memnon. 11 Free time in Luxor or an optional trip to see the temples at Abydos; overnight train to Cairo. 12 Explore the Pyramids; afternoon visit the Egyptian Museum. 13 End Cairo.
