About Our Polar Expeditions

Our state-of-the-art expedition ships navigate safely and comfortably deep into the Arctic, the Antarctic and all points in between. These ships enable you to unlock a wondrous world where wildlife exists in overwhelming numbers - where whales show as much curiosity about us as we do about them - and where some of the most remote communities on earth will welcome you like long lost-friends.

With these ships as floating bases, you choose the level of adventure that suits you: explore exquisite, desolate beaches by Zodiac inflatable boat; visit remote communities; or walk ashore into stunning wilderness areas and world-class cities alike.

The expedition staff and crew have hundreds of voyages between them. Their expertise, combined with the exceptional maneuverability and comfort of these ships, means voyages can be flexible, adjusting to changing conditions and participant interests. It also means you can access remote wildlife colonies and isolated backwaters to a degree experienced by very few travelers. These voyages aim to set the industry benchmarks for minimum environmental impact and stringent safety practices.

Onboard experts

These voyages are led by a carefully selected team of dedicated and enthusiastic expedition staff, chosen not only for their local knowledge and wealth of experience but also their great love of the destinations. Rather than the more traditional cruise-ship entertainment, the team will bring your destinations to life through informal talks, walks and hikes ashore, interpretive Zodiac excursions and one-to-one or small group conversations.

With a small passenger capacity, the onboard experts are always available to answer any questions on the natural and cultural history of the places visited. You will never disembark feeling short-changed by the destinations you have visited. Teams of experts are selected that include ornithologists, geologists, historians, marine biologists, botanists, astronomers, culture experts, artists, photographers and general naturalists.

Frequent shore excursions

As much time is spent off the ship as possible. All ships carry a fleet of sturdy, inflatable Zodiacs and are able to disembark all participants at once - swiftly, easily and safely.

Wildlife and ornithology

Bird and wildlife watching is the backbone of many of our programs. Zodiacs allow incredible close encounters and groups will regularly head out in the company of world-renowned naturalists and ornithologists in search of rare and interesting wildlife.

Walking and hiking

During most landings you can join walking or hiking groups on exploratory walks of varying length. The key here is that you can be as active or adventurous as you like.

Photography

These voyages present some of the most spectacular scenery and captivating wildlife on the planet. Even the most casual ‘snappers’ get carried away! All our voyages have a strong photographic orientation and we have photographic experts onboard to answer your questions whether on film or digital photography.

Prices and itineraries shown for tours departing from January 2010 onwards are subject to change and confirmation with the publication of our 2010/11 brochure, due to be published in October 2009.
