Andean Horseback Expedition
11 days - from $3195
This extraordinary horse riding expedition crosses the towering Andes mountains, following in the path of the army of General José de San Martín – one of South America's most famous independence heroes
In January 1817, the rebel Andes Army under the command of Argentinean General San Martin spearheaded its way across the Andes and defeated the Spanish at Chacabuco in Chile. Our 11-day Andean horse riding adventure retraces much of San Martin's route over these stunning mountains. The scenery is breathtaking and the riding challenging, as our expedition takes us past imposing Mount Aconcagua (6962m) - the highest mountain in the Americas. Sure-footed mountain horses carry us over the narrow, windswept passes and through steep sided gorges. We continue on, fording fast flowing streams before descending into lush, tranquil valleys. Experienced Argentinean horsemen or 'gauchos' guide us and pack mules carry our camping equipment and supplies. This horseback adventure is for those riders, seeking a challenging 8-day trail ride amidst one of the most spectacular mountain chains in the world.
