Ouagadougou & Mossi villages We begin in the middle west African savannah in Burkina's modern capital Ouagadougou to enjoy the charm and bustle of its vibrant street life and markets. It was also the seat of the Moro Naba, head of the Mossi, and our first excursion is to Kaya and the Mossi villages on the edge of the Sahel, to learn more about their culture and the history of their once great kingdom. Colonial Towns & Fabedougou Turning south west we head into the Hounde region, pausing at Boni where we hope to witness a traditional 'plank mask' dance of the spirits, unique to this area of the Volta basin. Next we come to Bobo-Dioulasso with its Sudanese style colonial buildings and mango tree-lined avenues. Around Banfora we see Burkina's natural highlights at Lake Tengrela and the Domes of Fabedougou, reminiscent of Australia's Bungle Bungles. Tribal Lands & Villages Turning east we enter the tribal lands of the south to explore Gan and Lobi villages with their fortress-like houses. Finally we return to Ouagadougou via the mud mosque in Ouahabou dating back to the 1830s and travelling through the Gourounsi region where we hope to witness traditional ceremonies of the local people and gain an insight into their everyday life.
