Comfortable weekend in the High Atlas Mountains and Marrakech

Close to Europe and perfect for a short break, this trip provides a great taste of North Africa, exploring the rich history and culture of Morocco, as well as its tremendously varied landscapes. There is time to explore the Imperial City of Marrakech with its historic mosques and palaces, maze-like souks, tranquil gardens and the Djemaa el Fna Square. A scenic drive takes us to Ouirgane, a picturesque valley in the High Atlas, where we walk through local villages. The Berber inhabitants are friendly and welcoming and many still live according to the seasons and age-old customs. On this trip we stay in a beautiful auberge in the countryside and a stunning riad hotel in Marrakech.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Start Marrakech. 2 Morning drive to foothills of High Atlas Mountains. Afternoon walk in Ouirgane Valley. 3 Four to five hours walking through the splendid Azaden Valley in Toubkal N.P.; picnic lunch en route; return to Marrakech. 4 Half day guided tour of Marrakech, afternoon at leisure. 5 End Marrakech.

Mode of travel: One and a half days gentle walking at low altitude.
