In remote eastern Finland, close to the Russian border, surrounded by frozen lakes and vast forests, is the Hotel Kalevala. This attractive wooden hotel is our comfortable base for a week of exciting winter activities, while learning about the great traditions and folklore of this region. Explore the surrounding snow-covered landscape from the comfort of a snowmobile, reindeer or husky sleigh ride. A highlight for the kids will be the husky farm and a ride through the silent forest trails before returning to our base with breathtaking lake views.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Star Kuhmo. 2 Morning cross-country ski lesson. Free use of the ski equipment for the rest of the day. 3 Visit husky farm. Enjoy a tour of the kennels and 5km dogsledding trip. 4 Free day to choose from a range of optional activities including ice-fishing, ice-sculpting or ice-skating. 5 Today is also free to try some more dogsledding (optional) or even visit the Petola Nature Centre. 6 Snowmobile safari (approx 15km) with children sitting in sleighs behind the guide; afternoon free to relax or try some kick-sledging. 7 Hotel Kalevala mini-olympic games with fun events such as snow-golf, ice-dancing and tobogganing. 8 End Kuhmo.

Accommodation: Hotel Kalevala is 3-star.\r\nLocated on the shores of Lake Lammasjarvi, this characterful wooden building has 44 rooms, all with en suite bathrooms. The rooms are twin-bedded, or for families of three will accommodate two adults and one child. The excellent restaurant overlooks the lake, and serves plenty of local produce including fish and wild berries. Other facilities include two saunas, a peat sauna and wellbeing department with jacuzzi and massage services.
