Stunning panoramic views Whale watching and canoeing Swimming at the beach
The lush volcanic island of Madeira sits in the Atlantic Ocean and its sub-tropical climate all year round makes it an ideal outdoor activity destination. Known as 'The Island of Eternal Springs', there is a wealth of natural beauty to explore with over 1,000 miles of small canals known as 'levadas' acting as superb walkways through the mountainous landscape. Our walks take us to some of the highest peaks of the island, the spectacular meeting of 25 waterfalls and one of the last untouched places in Europe - Ponta de São Lourenço. After enjoying stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic we take to the ocean with a whale watching trip and canoeing adventure off the coast from Funchal.
Itinerary:
Day 1 Start Encumeada. 2 Gentle walk through the Rabacal valley to the Risco Waterfall and the Levada of 25 Fontes with stunning views of the natural springs. 3 High level walk through woods of chestnut and eucalyptus under the looming Pico Grande, providing fine views across the island; transfer to Funchal. 4 Morning of whale watching with a boat tour into the Atlantic Ocean; free afternoon on the beach or sightseeing. 5 Short transfer to Ponta de São Lourenço; walk to the extreme east of the island exploring one of the last nearly untouched places in Europe. 6 Morning canoeing off the coast between Funchal and Garajau; afternoon free for visit to botanical gardens or cable car ride (optional) or for own exploration. 7 Early transfer to Pico de Arieiro in time for sunrise; walk to the highest peaks of the island before returning to Funchal via the beautiful village of Santana. 8 End Funchal.
