Bordering Italy and Austria, the dramatic limestone peaks of the Julian Alps dominate the north-east of Slovenia. The country's highest peak Mount Triglav (2864m) is in the centre of the park, and the surrounding country offers superb snowshoeing possibilities. Trails head through peaceful forests, open meadows, alongside glacial lakes as well as higher up into the mountains themselves. Snowshoes allow us to explore areas otherwise inaccessible at this time of year. Our base for the week is just outside the lovely lakeside town of Bled, ideally located to access a huge variety of walking routes and a fantastic place to take in some local culture and local wines! The highlight of the trip is a two-day expedition when we overnight in a traditional mountain hut.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Fly from Gatwick to Ljubljana with Adria Airways, transfer by road to Bled (30 mins). 2-4 Three guided snowshoe walks in the Triglav National Park. 5 Free day with options for downhill skiing at Kranska Gora or a trip to the world-famous Postojna Caves. 6-7 Two-day snowshoe expedition on the high plateau of Bogatin, overnighting in a mountain hut. 8 Free morning in Bled, before returning to Ljubljana. Fly from Ljubljana to Gatwick.

Accommodation: Pension Lukanc GuesthouseWe spend six nights at this charming pension, situated a few kilometres from the centre of historic Bled. We include two free evening transfers into town. All rooms have private facilities and most have a balcony or mountain view. There is a bar with spacious terrace and a dining room serving traditional Slovene cuisine. We also stay one night in a mountain hut with dormitory accommodation: it is basic but comfortable with excellent home-cooked food.
