The mountains of the Picos de Europa - Spain's first National Park - offer some of the finest, most dramatic mountain scenery in the country, with lush valleys, deep rocky gorges, and fascinating cave systems. Add in the proximity of the stunning Cantabrian Coast, and this area provides the perfect location for a family-orientated activity holiday. Once again, we have teamed up with long-time Exodus partner, and local activity guru, Jim Thomson and his wife Pilar.Booking your activities:All the activities above are optional. When you book, please specify the numbers of days you want activities using the table of codes and prices below. On some days, there is a choice of options available for different ages. On arrival in Arenas you will be asked to specify which activities you want to take part in. Itinerary:
Day 1 Start Arenas. 2 Crawl and climb through the stalagmites and stalagtites of the local caves or try horse riding in the foothills of the Picos. 3 Easy rock-climbing or treasure hunt. 4 Self-guided hike up and down the dramatic Cares Gorge. 5 Canyoning into deep pools and water slides or visit Ribadesella beach and museum. 6 Self-guided biking or learn how honey is produced in the house of honey. 7 A day of canoeing down the river Sella or quad-biking. 8 End Arenas.
Mode of travel: Flights to Bilbao with Easyjet. Transfers Bilbao to Arenas (2 hours): shared bus transfer.
Group size: Min 2, max 25. There is no tour leader, but there will be an Exodus representative to co-ordinate the activities locally.
Accommodation: The CentresWe use two different hotels in the lovely mountain village of Arenas de Cabrales. Hotel Torrecerredo Our first choice is the Torrecerredo, a family-run hotel, situated in quiet meadows a few hundred metres from the edge of the village. It has a pleasant garden terrace, and all rooms have en suite facilities.Hotel ArdinalWhere necessary, we also use the Hotel Ardinal, located just 5 minutes walk from the Torrecerredo. This is a comfortable hotel with picturesque views of the valley and all rooms are en suite.
