The coast and hills of Libya: incredibly well-preserved ancient sites, troglodyte dwellings and atmospheric Tripoli old town
Libya is home to some of the Mediterranean's most remarkable ancient ruins. Leptis Magna is the most famous, but the well-preserved sites of Sabratha, Ptolemais, Cyrene and Apollonia all give fascinating insights into the ancient world of the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. Inland are cliff-top villages and troglodyte dwellings on Jebel Nafusa. This cultural itinerary is further brought to life by visits to the excellent Tripoli Museum and the museum at Qasr Libya, which houses a unique collection of beautiful mosaics from different eras. In contrast, exploring the old quarter of Tripoli with its medina and souks gives a flavour of the Libya of today.
